FILM SERIES WITH CASPERVEK

Saturday 12 October – 5:30 pm
The Adventures of Prince Achmed (Germany, 1926)
With Laura Lorenzo (principal flautist of the Spanish National Youth Orchestra)

The first animated feature film in history, created by pioneering German filmmaker Lotte Reiniger. Developed using a distinctive cut-out silhouette technique inspired by Eastern shadow theatre, The Adventures of Prince Achmed is a timeless adventure tale based on several stories from One Thousand and One Nights.

Saturday 9 November – 5:30 pm
The Phantom of the Opera (United States, 1925)
With Beatriz Arenas (international soprano)

The first film adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s classic novel. This version, starring Lon Chaney, was one of the most expensive productions of its time. Its groundbreaking make-up and character design, along with its spectacular sets recreating the Paris Opera House and the Catacombs, went on to inspire decades of filmmaking and established an early archetype of modern Gothic horror.

Saturday 7 December – 5:30 pm
Sherlock Jr. (United States, 1924)
Buster Keaton is synonymous with the master of physical comedy. In Sherlock Jr., Keaton delivers a sharp parody of detective films and novels, which were highly popular in the 1920s. As in most of his work, the film is a sequence of brilliant gags and comedic sketches, showcasing not only his humour but also his extraordinary ability to perform daring stunts without a double.
